Ethnohistoric Legacy of Slavery in America as a Root Cause of Health Inequities for African Americans and Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder (PTSD)

This month we are honored to have a presentation from Dr. Rodney G. Hood, MD, FACP followed by a Q&A.

Dr. Rodney Hood serves as CEO and Managing Partner at Care View Medical Group in Southeast San Diego, which he co-founded in 1980. A speaker who has lectured extensively for diverse national audiences of health care providers, health administrators, medical students, federal and state governmental agencies, as well as private and public audiences, Dr. Hood addresses the current health care concerns in the United States, especially health issues that persist in the most vulnerable populations.

Dr. Hood’s areas of expertise include health disparities, historic aspects of race, genetics and health outcomes, medical history, health policy, cultural competency in healthcare and managed care administration. He has testified on Capitol Hill before several US congressional committees and participated in congressional and White House health forums. Dr. Hood was appointed to Medicare’s Health Disparities Study Panel with the National Academy of Social Insurance in Washington, DC.

Dr. Hood is an honor graduate from Northeastern University School of Pharmacy, UCSD School of Medicine, UCSD Medical School Internal Medicine Residency, and is the past President and Chairman of the Board of the National Medical Association. He serves as UCSD Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine and a board-certified physician of internal medicine currently in private practice.

Boards and Commissions

Last month Celsey Taylor from Terra Lawson-Remer’s County Supervisor’s office spoke to us about applying and serving on county Boards and Commissions such as the Human Relations Commission, Behavioral Health Advisory Board, Civil Service Commission, and the Committee for Persons with Disabilities.

After the meeting Celsey followed up with Amanda Berry from the Supervisor’s office on the question of Conflicts of interest —

They are handled differently depending on what board, committee, or commission it is. For example, Assessment Appeals Board and Civil Service Commission require a Form 700 and a Form 519. Behavioral Health Advisory Board doesn't allow individuals to serve if they work for an organization that receives County BHS contracts, with few exceptions. Amanda recommends that individuals reach out to her or the contact listed on the fact sheet for the specific Board or Commission. The fact sheet will generally state the filings necessary. This is a screen capture from the Assessment Appeals Board fact sheet as an example.

The list of all boards and commissions and links to their fact sheets is here.

Election of Officers

As Ruth Rollins, Chair of the Nominating Committee, reported at our last meeting we have a slate of officers running for election in 2023 — and any member in good standing can be nominated from the floor.

Three of the candidates for office are well known to you already and they are joined by Mandy Havlik who many of you met during the last election cycle.

  • President — James ‘Kip’ Eischen - link to bio

  • Vice President — Leslie Bruce - link to bio

  • Treasurer — Angela Hawkins - link to bio

  • Secretary — Mandy Havlik

Mandy Havlik is currently an elected member of the Peninsula Community Planning Board (PCPB). She is a proud spouse of a Navy Combat Veteran and mother of two children who attend Ocean Beach Elementary School and Dana Middle School. She is a proud indigenous woman and is a registered member of the Timiskaming First Nation in Canada. Most recently, she was a city council candidate for District 2.

She is a community advocate and volunteer who has consistently shown up for the community in a variety of ways. She is an advocate for traffic safety and is always championing improving the safety of our community by requesting traffic safety mitigations for streets that have been identified as dangerous transit areas. She advocates for the environment with her work on the PCPB and as a founding member of Kate's Trees, she passionately advocates for trees to be planted throughout the City of San Diego. She believes that we need to have sustainable development and growth policies that balance the needs of the existing community and quality of life while providing more affordable housing. She loves to cook, sing, read books and spend time with friends and family in her free time.

She has previously volunteered as the Ocean Beach Elementary Garden Coordinator for three years where she worked with parent volunteers and school staff to teach children about gardening and help them grow organic produce that is sampled by the school children in the classroom and in the school cafeteria.

She is the Secretary of the PCPB, Chair of the PCPB Traffic and Transportation subcommittee, Chair of the PCPB Parks and Recreation subcommittee and the Co-Chair of the PCPB Environmental subcommittee. She is also a member of the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Council, Point Loma Association, Ocean Beach Town Council Advocacy Subcommittee and Ocean Beach Woman's Club. She is also a member of the Point Loma Rotary Club and the La Playa Unit of Rady Children's Hospital Auxiliary. She is on the Treewatch Earthworks board that hosts EarthFair in Balboa Park. She is also a member of the CA Coalition to Abolish Child Marriage.

She is excited about the opportunity of working with the local community and to continue to make the Peninsula a wonderful place to live and raise children.

Behind the Late Lobbying Disclosure That Earned Midway Rising a Fine for Breaking City Ethics Laws

Just after the San Diego City Council chose a company to redevelop the Sports Arena, the winning developer filed a lobbying disclosure that was due months earlier.

Not only did none of the other bidders for the Sports Arena project file the disclosure form at all – neither did any other company that had business before the city in 2021. Not one.

The political consultant is not named in the disclosure or in the Ethics Commission’s settlement write up. But Midway Rising’s political consultant was Dan Rottenstreich, a strategist for many Democratic candidates and campaigns in the county [Dr. Jennifer Campbell, Mara Elliott and new candidate for San Diego City Attorney Heather Ferbert].
